CVN 79 Design To Conform to Predecessor

By RICHARD R. BURGESS, Managing Editor

The second unit of the Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will feature very few changes from that of the initial ship of the class.

The yet-to-be-named CVN 79 will see no change in major design features, Mike Shawcross, vice president for carrier construction programs at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding at Newport News, Va., told reporters May 4 at the Navy League’s Sea-Air-Space Exposition.

Shawcross said the product model design of CVN 78, the Gerald R. Ford, had been completed in December. The first ship, now under construction, is scheduled for delivery to the Navy in September 2015.

The keel laying of CVN 79 is scheduled for December 2014. The carrier is scheduled to be launched in August 2018 and delivered to the Navy in September 2020.
