Global Engagement is Focus of Sea-Air-Space 2010

By PETER ATKINSON, Deputy Editor

The U.S. sea services’ global engagement capabilities will be showcased during the Navy League’s 2010 Sea-Air-Space (SAS) Exposition May 3-5 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center at National Harbor, Md.

From the humanitarian relief effort in earthquake-stricken Haiti and keeping the sea lanes safe for merchant shipping to new challenges of cybersecurity and finding alternative sources of energy, SAS 2010 will highlight the latest national and international sea power developments, technologies and tactics through panel discussions, exhibits, special guest speakers and demonstrations.

“With this year’s theme, ‘Responding Globally — Engaged at Sea & Ashore,’ we hope to give attendees and exhibitors a lively forum for information sharing, and to provide, through our professional seminars, an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the way ahead on issues such as cyber warfare, combating piracy, ‘smart power’ and other major initiatives under way,” said Navy League National President Daniel B. Branch Jr.

As the largest maritime exposition in the world, SAS 2010 offers a unique opportunity for key decision-makers in the U.S. military and government to meet and mingle with defense contractors, research and development specialists, and foreign military attachés. More than 150 exhibitors from around the world will have their technologies and solutions on display, and top civilian and military leaders from the U.S. Department of Defense, Homeland Security, Maritime Administration and the defense industry will be in attendance.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Navy Secretary Ray Mabus are among the military and defense industry leaders scheduled to take part in SAS 2010. Gates is scheduled to be the keynote speaker during the Sea-Air-Space Luncheon May 3, and Mabus is set to speak at the Secretary of the Navy Luncheon May 5.

Other government and service leaders scheduled to participate in SAS 2010 include: Adm. Gary Roughead, chief of naval operations; Adm. Thad W. Allen, Coast Guard commandant; Gen. James T. Conway, Marine Corps commandant; David T. Matsuda, acting Maritime Administrator; Ashton B. Carter, undersecretary of defense for Acquisition, Technology & Logistics; Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert, vice chief of naval operations; Vice Adm. David P. Pekoske, Coast Guard vice commandant; Vice Adm. Adam M. Robinson Jr., surgeon general of the Navy and chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery; and Vice Adm. Bernard J. McCullough III, commander, U.S. Fleet Cyber Command.

The three-day exposition will open with the Service Chiefs’ Panel discussing the importance of sea power to national security. Other panel discussions will highlight “Partners Against Piracy,” “Smart Power: Haiti,” “Energy: The Next Wave” and “Cyber Warfare and Security.” Additional floor speakers, including the program executive officers of key Navy, Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security programs, will be available following the panel discussions to address more specific topics.

New this year is the Renewable, Alternative, Sustainable Energy Pavilion, which will bring together Navy League Corporate Members and military energy policymakers and program managers.

Seapower will provide online coverage of SAS 2010 as it happens, with updates available through Seapower Expo Online (www.seaairspace.org/2010/SEAPOWER-Expo-Online) and its companion Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/seaairspaceexpo) offering up-to-the-minute news from the SAS floor, allowing the opportunity for military, government and industry leaders to review significant events, panel discussions, keynote speakers and other news. This editorial coverage will remain online up to two months following the show’s conclusion.
